"The report provides an overview of the situation of women and girls in rural areas, examines the global context and points out how advancing rural women’s and girls’ empowerment contributes to rural development and food security. It discusses rural women’s access to resources (land, finance, extension, information and technology) and markets, employment and decent work, and social protection. It discusses their contribution to unpaid care work, how service provision can reduce the burden of such work, and their role in sustainable development. The report concludes with a set of recommendations for consideration by the Commission on the Status of Women."

The shifting flows and paths of global change, climate change mitigation and adaptation as well as environmental changes, create diverse challenges and opportunities for social and economic transformations in the Nordic setting.
The theme of the second Nordic Rural Research conference is "Rural at the Edge". All researchers and developers with an interest in the Nordic rural areas as an empirical field are welcomed to discuss their ongoing research and projects with key scholars from the region.

Friday 10 February 2012. "Regional and rural settlement of migrants and refugees is an increasingly relevant settlement trend in Australia, assisted by government policy and community sector initiatives and motivated by migrants and refugees themselves."
"Settlement is influenced by the pre-arrival experiences of migrants and refugees, along with a multitude of micro and macro factors in the social, political and economic realms of the destination country which play out differently in metropolitan and regional or rural locations. The visibility of the most recently-arrived migrants and refugees from Africa, the Middle East, South and South-East Asia is also a feature of their settlement experience.
Exploring these issues and related debates, the Conference will showcase the research of the ARC Linkage Project and engage leading academics working in related areas to provide a wider national, international and comparative overview of regional migration and settlement trends, policies, praxis and reality."
The Conference is hosted by the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project "Resettling Visible Migrants and Refugees in Rural and Regional Australia" conducted out of the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne in partnership with the Victorian Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship (OMAC) and Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV).

The innovation and knowledge-based economy has become a major driver of economic growth in urban areas around the world resulting in the roles of cities and regions in a global economy being redefined and reshaped.
The transformation that has emerged is as significant and as challenging as the transformation that has been made from agriculture to industry; specifically the move away from jobs based on physical activity or repetitive tasks to ones that require analytical skills and judgement. Cities play an important role in the shifting economy. The studies, and their growing evidence, form the basis from which rural and northern Ontario communities would be able to work towards building stronger, more vibrant and dynamic creative economies independently and through collaborative efforts. This conference focused on how the theory of the creative economy can be experienced in practice in rural Ontario communities.

"In May 2007, a major demographic milestone was passed. For the first time, the earth’s population became more urban than rural. This process of urbanization will accelerate in the decades to come: most of the growth in the world population – to 9 billion people in 2050 – will occur in urban areas. By 2050, the urban population will be approximately twice the size of the rural population."
Research on multifunctional agriculture and changing urban-rural relations is highly fragmented, both disciplinarily and geographically, which is due to the multiplicity of activities, the multi-scalar character of multifunctionality and the geographical contextuality of expressions of multifunctional agriculture. Hence, this conference aims to advance the scientific state of the art in research on multifunctional agriculture and urban-rural relations by bringing together scholars from a wide range of disciplines (sociology, economics, spatial planning, land-use planning, regional planning, urban planning, crop sciences, animal sciences, soil sciences, architecture, etc.) from many parts of the world.
