PhD Studentship: Mapping and Repositioning Forestry Skills for the 21st Century
The aim of this PhD is to explore the ways in which conceptual and theoretical frameworks such as multi- functionality and / or ecosystem services might be combined with a ‘Systems’ approach to enhance understanding of the educational and skills requirements of forestry in the 21st Century. The PhD will commence in October 2014 and the successful candidate will be based at the University of the Highlands and Islands- Inverness College (Centre for Remote and Rural Studies), Scotland. The funding associated with this project covers the equivalent of three years, full-time UK/EU tuition fees, plus a stipend (at Research Council UK levels) for three years. The project is a collaboration between Inverness College UHI and the University of Aberdeen and is funded by Scottish Forestry Commission (Scotland and GB) and the Scottish Forestry Trust. PhD Studentship: Factors controlling the abundance of pine-tree lappet moth (Dendrolimus pini) in north-east Scotland.
This studentship is offered jointly with Forest Research and builds upon research undertaken since 2009 to investigate population densities and distribution of the newly discovered and only known breeding population of the pine tree lappet moth in the UK, The project will determine what level of risk this species may pose to pinewoods, including Caledonian Pinewood Inventory forests, both now and under future climate scenarios. In particular it will focus on the potential contribution of British native parasites, predators, and other natural control agents and climate in regulating populations of pine-tree lappet moth in north-east Scotland. The known distribution and potential spread of this moth, and incorporation of natural control measures through an integrated land management approach will also be explored The project is jointly funded by Inverness College UHI and Forest Research. The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Programme has been established by the Government of Canada to enable Canadian universities to foster research excellence and enhance their role as world-class centres of research excellence. This will be a tenure stream appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, and will be conditional on the successful applicant being approved as a Tier II Research Chair by the CRC secretariat. The CRC Chair in Sustainable Rural Futures will provide a catalyst for launching a new era of social science research in the region to foster more productive ties between the university, government agencies, community organizations, and rural communities. Unlike other Canadian regions, the Atlantic remained steadfastly rural through the 20th and into the 21st century. More of its population lives in small cities or towns, its infrastructure is more spread out and costly to maintain, its main economies remain resource and energy based, and much of its population migrates westward in search of better opportunities. In recent years, Atlantic Canada’s population, excepting First Nations, is also documented as older than in other regions, less healthy, more religious, and less ethnically and racially diverse. This has led to widespread interest in whether or not immigration can offset population trends and perhaps even trigger growth and renewal of the region’s economy. Other political and economic re-orientations include a shift from fisheries, lumber and minerals to gas, oil, aquaculture, alternative energy, new agricultural initiatives, and more recently, industrial shipbuilding. Creative enterprises in information technology, health, and the cultural sectors are also on the increase.

Candidates must have a PhD, an outstanding research profile and a demonstrable research emphasis of relevance to sustainable rural futures in Atlantic Canada generally and Nova Scotia in particular. The researcher’s profile could reflect research from comparable international locations, perhaps on the Atlantic or Pacific coasts, or a different region of Canada such as the Prairie Provinces, Ontario, or Quebec.

The Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology maintains a carefully structured curriculum covering selected strategic areas in our disciplines. Masters and Doctoral programmes are offered in both Sociology or Social Anthropology but faculty from each discipline collaborate in teaching and research. Our graduate teaching and recruitment mirrors faculty research expertise in three research concentrations; Critical Health Studies; Economy, Work, and Development; and, Social Justice and Inequality. The successful applicant for this position will identify one or more of these areas in their research priorities. While the position prioritizes research, it is expected that the CRC Chair will contribute to our graduate programmes and the core undergraduate curriculum. We anticipate that the appointment will be made to a researcher with a background in either Sociology or Social Anthropology, but candidates from related disciplines with appropriate expertise and knowledgeable about SOSA theory and methods, such as development studies, geography, political science, and related interdisciplinary studies, are also encouraged to apply.

The Centre for Rural and Northern Health Research (CRaNHR) at Laurentian University is seeking a director for July 1, 2011. The Centre is committed to improving health services and access to health care, particularly in rural and northern communities.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a strong record of achievement in rural and northern health, population health or health services research as demonstrated by successful research grants and publications. Previous experience managing research projects and research teams is required. A Ph.D. is required along with undergraduate and graduate education in a health-related discipline. Experience working with Aboriginal (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) communities is an asset as is bilingualism (English/French). The person selected may also be appointed or cross-appointed at Laurentian University to an academic unit related to the candidate’s research expertise. The director’s salary and benefits are funded through the Centre’s generated revenues.

La sede del cargo es Santiago, Chile. La o el Director(a) Ejecutivo(a) es la máxima autoridad ejecutiva de la organización, responsable ante el Consejo Directivo a través de su Presidente.

Los candidatos para el cargo deben tener una trayectoria profesional muy destacada y un amplio reconocimiento por sus pares como un líder en su campo a nivel nacional e internacional. Al menos diez años de experiencia profesional a contar de su título profesional. Una parte significativa de su experiencia profesional habrá sido realizada en América Latina.

Deben contar con experiencia en la dirección de organizaciones con o sin fines de lucro, a nivel de gerencia o presidencia o sus equivalentes. Experiencia de trabajo en red y, preferentemente, de coordinación de redes de colaboración con actores diversos. Liderazgo y conducción de equipos. La experiencia de dirección de procesos de cambio organizacional es una ventaja importante.

Opportunity for graduate students to conduct research
with a focus on rural development and rural community issues

We would be willing to hire you as a temporary employee to write a research report for us with the understanding that this would contribute to your thesis. And while you are in Ottawa, you can check out the excellent employment opportunities within Statistics Canada.

This opportunity is for students who want to access Statistics Canada micro-data (which cannot be accessed from outside Statistics Canada) as well as for students who wish to use data from the Community Database of the Agriculture Division (a database with community level socio-economic data from the Census of Population 1981 to 2001 and currently being updated to 2006).

What you should do
The first step is to contact us to discuss the availability of data for your research and the possibilities of writing a working paper or a bulletin. A subsequent step will be to write a concise research proposal (a template will be provided upon request).

You should submit the proposal at least one full semester in advance of your suggested starting date.

What we will do
The proposal will be reviewed by an internal committee at Statistics Canada and the result of the review will be communicated to you.

Proposals for collaboration will be selected based on an interview and the pertinence of the topic. We expect to be able to develop no more than two research collaborations per academic semester. If you are selected, you will become a temporary employee of Statistics Canada and have the same rights and obligations as an employee.

Prior to sharing with people outside Statistics Canada, the research will be subject to both an internal Statistics Canada review which involves a review of the research as it applies to the policies of the University Research Partnership Program, Researcher Agreement of the Agriculture Division, Statistics Canada, and a review of the confidentiality of the data for publication.

Est-ce que cette analyse pourrait être publiée en tant que Document de travail sur l’agriculture et le milieu rural ou en tant que Bulletin d’analyse – Régions rurales et petites villes du Canada de Statistique Canada? Dans l’affirmative, veuillez lire ce qui suit.

Nous serions prêts à vous embaucher à titre d’employé(e) temporaire pour écrire un rapport de recherche pour nous, en plus de contribuer à la rédaction de votre thèse. En outre, pendant votre séjour à Ottawa, vous aurez la possibilité de consulter les excellentes possibilités d’emploi au sein de Statistique Canada.

Cette offre s’adresse aux étudiants qui aimeraient avoir accès aux microdonnées de Statistique Canada (auxquels on ne peut avoir accès à l’extérieur de Statistique Canada) ainsi qu’aux étudiants qui souhaitent utiliser les données de la Base de données sur les collectivités de la Division de l’agriculture (une base de données qui contient des données socioéconomiques au niveau des collectivités tirées du Recensement de la population de 1981 à 2001 et qui est présentement mise à jour avec les données de 2006).

Que devez-vous faire?
La première étape est de communiquer avec nous pour discuter de la disponibilité des données pour votre recherche et les possibilités de rédiger un document de travail ou un bulletin. L’étape suivante sera d’écrire une proposition de recherche brève (un modèle vous sera fourni, au besoin).

Vous devriez soumettre votre proposition au moins un semestre avant votre date de début proposée.

Que ferons-nous?
La proposition sera examinée par un comité interne à Statistique Canada et on communiquera avec vous pour vous faire part du résultat.

Les propositions de collaboration seront choisies à la suite d’une entrevue et selon la pertinence du sujet. Nous prévoyons avoir la possibilité d’élaborer un maximum de deux projets de recherche par semestre académique. Si vous êtes choisi(e), vous deviendrez un(e) employé(e) temporaire de Statistique Canada et aurez les mêmes droits et obligations qu’un(e) employé(e).

Avant de partager votre recherche avec les gens à l’extérieur de Statistique Canada, elle sera sujette à une révision interne à Statistique Canada qui comprend une révision de la recherche, tel que stipulé dans les politiques du Programme de partenariat de recherche avec les universités, Entente avec les chercheurs de la Division de l’agriculture, Statistique Canada, ainsi qu’un examen de la confidentialité des données aux fins de publication.

Do you want to gain on-farm experience in sustainable agriculture? A new program in Alberta has just been launched.

ASAAP's Mission:
To support people interested in getting into sustainable agriculture by providing on-farm experience and training through an apprenticeship style program. ASAAP also supports farmers providing training in order to contribute towards a positive and successful experience for both the apprentice and the farmer.

As an apprentice with one of the ASAAP farms you will be connected to a network of other apprentices and farmers which will enhance your apprenticeship experience, learning opportunities and achievement of future goals.
