The University of Alberta’s Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities (ACSRC) is proud to announce the launch of the Canadian Sustainability Plan Inventory (CSPI). This searchable online inventory is the most comprehensive collection of sustainability plans in Canada.

Sustainability in rural communities of Canada has received increased attention at the local and national scales. Canada’s Federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF) made sustainability planning a key part of infrastructure and socio-economic development of communities across Canada. Slated to ultimately invest approximately $13 billion in sustainable municipal infrastructure such as transit, waste management, water and green energy by 2015, the GTF also provided support to municipalities for the development of Integrated Community Sustainability Plans (ICSPs).
Many communities have now completed ICSPs or a provincial variant and these represent a wide range of approaches, toolkits, strategies and content within Alberta and from across the country. As such, there is no single solution or model for sustainability planning. Indeed, there is considerable variation in emphases among the targeted dimensions of sustainability and these emphases vary by region and by population size. This inventory provides a means for rural communities, researchers, and development practitioners to access how other communities from across Canada have approached sustainability planning in terms of process, content and areas of concentration.
With the launch of the CSPI, the ACSRC hopes to provide a valuable resource of previous ICSPs to rural communities, an up-to-date source of information and a mechanism that may support rural sustainability as communities shift from plans to implementation. We hope this inventory and sharing of ICSPs will foster collaboration and information exchange among the many and diverse rural communities in Canada, so that they may learn from and support each other in their quest for sustainability.

Researchers and policymakers focusing on rural development issues commonly use the term "frontier" to denote relatively remote and sparsely settled territory, found largely but not exclusively in the Great Plains and Intermountain West.
ERS's newly developed Frontier and Remote (FAR) area codes are both geographically detailed and adjustable within reasonable ranges to facilitate their use in diverse research and policy contexts. The initial set, based on urban-rural data from the 2000 decennial census, provides four separate FAR categories, ranging from one that is relatively inclusive (18 million FAR residents) to one that is more restrictive (4.8 million FAR residents).

In 2011, Canada had 205,730 census farms, a decrease of 10.3% (or 23,643 farms) since the last census. The total land on farms stands at 160,155,748 acres, down 4.1% since 2006.
Compared to 2006, the average size of a Canadian farm increased from 728 acres to 778 acres, a growth of 6.9%.
For the first time, operators in the age group 55 and over represented the largest share of total operators. They accounted for 48.3% compared to 40.7% in 2006, up from 32.1% in 1991.

Between 2006 and 2011, Canada's rural population increased by 1.1%, compared to Canada's overall growth rate of 5.9%.
According to the 2011 Census, more than 6.3 million Canadians were living in rural areas, that is, areas with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants and a population density below 400 people per square kilometre. This number has been relatively stable since 1991, while the population living outside of rural areas has been rising steadily. Consequently, the proportion of Canadians who live in rural areas has been dropping and in 2011 fell below 1 in 5 Canadians to 18.9%.

In December of 2010, Statistics Canada’s Property Value Assessment Unit released data prepared for the administration of the Federal-Provincial Fiscal Arrangements Act and Regulations. These data, now available on the CID at the community level, include:
o residential property taxable values,
o property tax revenues, and
o population estimates (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008)
Natural Resources Canada’s 2006 resource-reliant indicator is now available on the CID. Resource reliance is a measure of the relative importance of a resource sector to a particular community. Resource sectors include: Agriculture, Energy, Fisheries, Forestry, and Mining

Au mois de décembre 2010, l’Unité d’évaluation de la valeur de la propriété de Statistique Canada a publié des données préparées pour l’administration de la Loi sur les arrangements fiscaux entre le gouvernement fédéral et les provinces. Ces données, maintenant offertes dans la BDC à l’échelle de la collectivité, comprennent :

New features and functionality. The Community Profiles feature provides a ready-made report for all communities across Canada that includes graphs and tables of various socio-economic indicators such as education, income, employment and population for 1996, 2001, and 2006.
* The profiles provide a socio-economic comparison of a community to its region, its peer group (similar communities within its province/territory), and all communities across its province/territory.
* The profiles show trends and changes at the local level which can help to inform local decision-making.
* The profiles can also help to reduce the amount of time and resources required to obtain and analyze community level data by providing ready made graphs and tables.
* In order to activate the Community Profile feature, select a single community by using the search tool in the mapping window (top of map window) and select the “profile” link that appears above the small map on the lower right hand side of the window when a community is selected.
* Each profile has its own unique link (URL) which can be placed on a web page or sent via email. Profiles are also available in PDF.

La fonction Profils de collectivités produit un rapport pour l'ensemble des collectivités du Canada. Ce rapport renferme des graphiques et des tableaux de divers indicateurs socio-économiques tels que l’éducation, le revenu, les emplois et la population pour les années 1996, 2001 et 2006.
* Les profils permettent de comparer la situation socio-économique d'une collectivité à celle de sa région homologue (collectivités similaires de la même province ou du même territoire) et à celle de l'ensemble des collectivités de la même province ou du même territoire.
* Les profils montrent les tendances et les changements au niveau local qui peuvent aider à éclairer la prise de décision.
* Les profils permettent de consacrer moins de temps et de ressources à l'obtention et à l'analyse des données sur les collectivités à travers des graphiques et tableaux prêts à utiliser.
* Pour activer la fonction Profils de collectivités, il suffit de sélectionner une collectivité à l'aide de l'outil de recherche dans la fenêtre de la cartographie (partie supérieure de la fenêtre) et de cliquer sur le lien « profil » qui apparaît au dessus de la petite carte dans le coin inférieur droit de la fenêtre une fois que la collectivité est sélectionnée.

The Atlas of Rural and Small-Town America is a mapping application that provides a spatial interpretation of county-level, economic and social conditions along four broad categories of socioeconomic factors.
These categories include:
* people (using newly released demographic data from the American Community Survey, including age, race and ethnicity, migration and immigration, education, household size and family composition);
* jobs (using economic data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other sources, including information on employment trends, unemployment, industrial composition, and household income);
* agriculture (using indicators from the 2007 Census of Agriculture, including number and size of farms, operator characteristics, off-farm income, and government payments); and
* county classifications (using typologies such as the rural-urban continuum, economic dependence, persistent poverty, population loss, and other ERS county codes).

The Northern Community Research Tool provides information about some 800 Northern communities; information can be extracted - and mapped - for nearly 90 indicators, for one, two or three indicators at a time.
Indicators are classified under the following headings:
* Demography - age, gender, Aboriginal identity and language, population
* Economy - income, economic diversity, unemployment rate, employment by industry
* Education - college and high school graduation, literacy rates, schools
* Geography - latitude and longitude

The Community Information Database now includes 83 indicators on co-operatives. The Community Information Database (CID) is a free internet-based tool that provides communities, researchers, and governments with access to consistent and reliable socio-economic and demographic data for all communities and regions across Canada.
The CID is available at www.cid-bdc.ca
The tool provides more than 900 social, demographic, and economic indicators, including population, income, employment, health, housing and many others. The data are presented in the form of interactive maps, tables, and charts.
CID users can now see the distribution of the co-operative sector across Canada by type (e.g. producer, consumer) and activity (e.g. retail, housing, daycare) for the years 1996, 2001, and 2006. The data comes from the Rural and Co-operatives Secretariat’s Annual Survey of Co-operatives in Canada.
This new development clearly demonstrates the economic and social importance of the co-operative model in Canada. For instance, the CID shows there are a great number of co-operatives in rural and remote communities providing a wide variety of goods and services. The presence of co-operatives in urban communities is also clearly demonstrated, speaking to the wide distribution and variety of the sector throughout Canada.
The Government of Canada’s Rural and Co-operatives Secretariat aims to build knowledge about rural communities and the contributions of co-operatives to society. By integrating co-operative data into the CID, researchers, government and the public can now easily retrieve information on the co-operative sector.

La Base de données sur les collectivités (BDC) est une ressource gratuite en ligne qui met à la disposition des collectivités, des chercheurs et des gouvernements des données socio-économiques et démographiques cohérentes et fiables sur l’ensemble des collectivités du Canada et des régions. Cet outil fournit plus de 900 indicateurs sociaux, démographiques et économiques, entre autres, sur la population, les revenus, l’emploi, la santé et le logement. Les données sont présentées sous forme de cartes, de tableaux et de graphiques interactifs.

The Community Information Database is a free Internet-based tool providing consistent and reliable social, economic and demographic data for all communities and regions across Canada.
The CID was developed by the Rural and Co-operatives Secretariat in collaboration with provincial, territorial and community partners. It is part of the Government of Canada’s ongoing support to rural and remote communities.

A new website offering information and statistics about Yukon communities is now available at http://sewp.gov.yk.ca.
The site offers new ways to find community statistics and will be particularly useful for people working on all aspects of Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board proposals, including making applications, providing comments and assessing projects.
The socio-economic web portal features valuable data about Yukon communities. Information is organized by place and in some cases by region. The data can be combined and interpreted to gain new insights into the social and economic issues of Yukon’s communities.
Users can access the statistical data by browsing through a map of Yukon communities, or searching for available statistics with key terms. The statistics are easy to print and are easily exported into reports or spreadsheets, allowing users to work with the data to address their own needs.
The website was developed by the Yukon Bureau of Statistics at the request of the Development Assessment branch of the government to meet the needs of Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Act proponents, assessors and the public. Primary funding for the web portal development was through the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, with additional funding from Natural Resources Canada (GeoConnections) and the Development Assessment branch. YBS would also like to thank Statistics Canada for their support and assistance.

The only tool of its kind in the world, the CLI measures learning conditions in more than 4,500 cities, towns and rural communities across Canada. Canada’s progress on the Composite Learning Index (CLI) is at a stand still in 2010, and there has only been marginal progress over the past five years.
Detailed results for more than 4,500 communities across Canada can be found on the newly redesigned CLI new website at www.cli-ica.ca. The new site offers a series of interactive maps and tools that allow users to explore the many findings of the CLI, as well as view and download a personalized CLI profile for their community.

Unique outil du genre au monde, l’ICA évalue les conditions d’apprentissage dans plus de 4 500 villes et communautés rurales du Canada. La note du Canada dans le cadre de l’Indice composite de l’apprentissage (ICA) reste, en cette année 2010, inchangée par rapport à l’année précédente.

The Wye City Group on Rural Statistics and Agricultural Household Income is hosting its third global conference on agricultural and rural household statistics. The conference will be hosted by ERS/USDA and is cosponsored by the FAO and the World Bank.
Conference objectives
• Support the U.N. global Strategy to Improve Agricultural and Rural Statistics by highlighting international needs and opportunities to improve statistics on rural and farm households, and strengthen the process of collecting and disseminating statistics on rural and farm households in OECD and developing countries; and
• Review and discuss revisions to the Wye Group Handbook on Rural Households’ Livelihood and Well-Being, and preparation of a Supplement to the Handbook on issues related to agricultural and rural statistics in developing countries.
