July 28 to 31, 2011 Annual Meeting in Boise, Idaho. "The cultural, economic, and political hegemony of large metropolitan cities has been unmistakable over the past century. However, unlike the past, the communities and people left behind in rural communities are much less isolated from mainstream cultural and economic influences."

"A new rural-urban interface is marked by the growing interpenetration of rural and urban life—in the United States and around the world. The fates of urban and rural populations are inextricably linked, for better or worse.

The theme of the 2011 annual meetings of the Rural Sociological Society explores key aspects of the new urbanization and urbanism of rural and small town life."
