Source: School of Environmental Design and Rural Development, University of Guelph.
"The Greenbelt was established by the provincial government in 2005 and covers 1.8 million acres of permanently protected green space, farmland, forests, wetlands and watersheds. Agriculture is an important economic activity across much of the Greenbelt and farmland accounts for just over 50% of the total Greenbelt acreage."
"The purpose of this report is to provide an accurate profile of farm activity and changes in the agricultural sector in the Ontario Greenbelt for the 2001 to 2006 period. The report relies on data provided by Statistics Canada from the 2001 and 2006 Census of Agriculture. A customized Census data base was prepared by Statistics Canada which specifically conforms to the boundary of the Greenbelt."
